Kanchipuram (Kanjivaram) silk sarees come from the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, home to one of South India’s best-known weaving traditions. The style is recognised by its rich silk body, bold contrast borders and pallus, and fine zari work. A hallmark of the tradition is korvai weaving, where the body and the border are woven separately and then interlocked, so the contrast border sits firmly with the body.

Temple borders, with their stepped, triangular shapes inspired by South Indian temple gopurams, are among the most recognisable designs in Kanchipuram weaving. The contrast korvai border is a classic feature of Kanchipuram sarees and adds a bold colour break against the body.
